The old and the new, this topic will be considered at a triple level:

1) an objective level: here the task of the historian is to describe and if possible to explain the emergence, within the three fields concerned (philosophy, sciences and kalām), of new disciplines, new issues and new concepts;

2) a subjective level: where one will seek to determine the ways the actors in the relevant fields perceive the new, welcome it or reject it..;

3) and finally, a reflexive level: the aim is here to evaluate the constant renewal of the analytical tools used by modern and contemporary disciplines in their approach of the three fields concerned. And since the world of Islamic culture is not a closed world, we will also consider, either as a point of comparison or as a process within a domain of reception of Islamic intellectual trends, the dialectic of the old and the new in Latin and in Hebrew.
